In the beginning God planted a garden in Eden, of all the trees there, God points out two trees to Adam and Eve. The fruit on one tree was the “knowledge” of good and evil. The fruit of the other tree was “Life” (Genesis 2:9). Of all the fruits God said Adam and Eve should eat in the garden, just one fruit was to be avoided. That fruit was the knowledge of good and evil. Repeat the following and pause at the commas…do not eat the fruit, of the knowledge, of good and evil (Genesis 2:16-17). Excellent.
The effects of that fateful decision to eat the “wrong fruit from the wrong tree” lives on today, and the enemy is busy with the same deception used on Adam and Eve. What is that deception? Simple. The enemy wants us to continue eating the wrong fruit; that is the fruit of the “knowledge” of good and evil…!! The enemy wants us to focus on the WRONG TREE…!!!
Let’s fast forward to Jesus and his arrival on the ministry scene. He said, I have come to bring LIFE and life abundantly (John 10:10). Wow, is that the same tree of LIFE in the garden?
Jesus then meets the people accusing an adulteress…(John 8:7), in their eyes, they (the people) were “good”, they should be allowed to carry out the sentence under the law of Moses. The woman was “evil” she had to be punished. Jesus does something absolutely remarkable with one simple statement, “he who is without sin cast the first stone”. In that split second, he gives the “guilty” woman her LIFE back. Wow. On that day, that lady ate of the tree of LIFE….!!!
When bad events happen in our lives, it’s human to feel hurt, to want to know who is responsible, to want to apply consequences, perhaps even to apportion blame. Every minute we spend “hurting”, fulfilling the victims role, thinking through how to adequately apply a consequence, the enemy is happy, the enemy is having a party. Why? Because he has us consumed with the “knowledge” of good and evil….
…On the WRONG TREE…!!
How do we know this to be true? God has a simple view on all things. Vengeance is mines says The Lord, I will repay (Hebrews 10:30). Again he says, forgive (Matthew 6:14-15). Blessed are the peace makers (Matthew 5:9). The storm may last for a night but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5). Everything God is telling us about the troubles we face and the trouble others go through, is simple. Choose the right fruit…feed on LIFE (not hurt)…choose the fruit of LIFE…choose Jesus Christ.
So today, when someone tells you their troubles, or you are going through troubles of your own, speak LIFE into that situation in the name of Jesus. Need a job, need accommodation, been hurt by someone close, know people doing what they are not supposed to…? No problem. The answer is the same, like Jesus, speak LIFE into those situations. Never again should we spend a moment working out the good and bad in any situation…instead model Jesus, give the person their LIFE back.
Speaking Life into situations requires confidence. Speaking Life into situations requires a radical change in our vocabulary. We no longer ask for “help”. Instead we use the language of Jesus Christ. Because it’s “no longer me that lives but Christ that lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). So in place of “help”, we use “let”. Jesus prayed (John 17:20-23), Father “let” them (some translations use ‘may’) be one with us as I am one with you. He could have said help them, but instead he said “let them/may they”. Jesus said he does that which he sees the father do (John 5:19). And he was very clear, no one comes to the father except through Him (John 14:6). Therefore we have to follow Jesus in both his words and his actions.
Are you ready to give LIFE?
Let us give up the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil i.e. the wrong tree, and give everyone we come in contact with, fruit from the tree of LIFE.
