“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35).
While on earth Jesus personified love – when people were hungry he extended spiritual grace and met their needs. This grace was not new, when the children of Israel were crossing the from Egypt to the promised land. Their meals every day for 40 years were provided by God. Sometimes its easy to lose sight of God’s compassion through whet we term his judgement.
When people had reached the limits of the healthcare services, they turned to Jesus and he healed them. He even restored people to life.
To say Jesus loves you is an understatement. Jesus commands His disciples to dedicate themselves to love one another. The standard is as Jesus loved them…wow…that’s steep. Can you imagine loving people who denied you (Peter denied Jesus); loving people who do not believe you (Thomas doubted Jesus’s resurrection); loving people who persecute you (Paul persecuted and killed followers of Jesus the Christ).
The standard of love Jesus wants requires our will, because our natural desires is to repay evil with evil…even within the church we excommunicate people instead of forgiving and restoring them.
Loving as Jesus loves us exacts a high price…are you ready?
