The word SIN is used to express a view on a behaviour, statement or action that is generally considered to be wrong. I think everyone will agree with this generalised summary of how Sin is viewed. Its not a bad starting point, BUT its not a helpful starting point either.

Why? Simply because SIN is first a spiritual concept. SIN is always in respect of God not humans. David writes in Psalm 51:4 – against you, you only have I sinned; and done what is evil in your sight. This is a good starting point, however lets go back to Cain and Abel. In Genesis 4:7 God informs Cain that “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted?

At that time there was only four (4) humans on the earth – Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel. So who was Cain doing wrong against? Cain submitted an offering to God and we are not provided the details of why Cain’s offering was unacceptable, but from what God told Cain, he was doing wrong against God.

Now God does not exist in flesh, so SIN is a concept that exists in the spirit FIRST, not in the flesh of humans. If you learn nothing else about SIN, please do let this fact find a place in your heart, mind and soul. SIN is a spiritual concept FIRST, when you and I sin, we sin against God. The target of our sinful actions may be humans and the planet, but our sin is against the Great I Am.
