I taught at a college for a year and what I am about to say, may shock some and not others. A significant number of our young people who will become the leaders of tomorrow, are not interested in skills. They are fascinated and completely absorbed and preoccupied with popularity.
There were some exceptionally bright, I mean academically bright boys and girls in my class. I successfully got them engaged but all my attempts at displacing the hold popularity had on their lives, failed miserably.
Isaiah 2:22 “Stop regarding man in whose nostrils is breath, for of what account is he?”
Choosing to follow Jesus is not the path to popularity. You’ve got to be a light, and most times we shine that light smack bang into peoples eyes… Galatians 1:10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
A few students focused and today I am really proud of their achievements. They chose to be unpopular – saying no when the others wanted to hang out. They chose to hone their exam skills answering past papers.
The obvious conclusion is to seek to be skilled and gain popularity because of skills, not because of a desire to be popular.
