Understanding Authority

The Holy Spirit…when doing God’s bidding does not enquire of the pope at the Vatican, the Arch Bishop of Canterbury, general superintendents, church or cell leaders. The Holy Spirit does not ask them what to do, who to commission to do the work, who to send. In every age including ours, the people making up the status quo are always shocked by who God chooses. Be encouraged.

Cain clearly didn’t think too much of Abel. Mr (Jacob) Israel’s 11 other sons weren’t ok with learning Joseph was going to rule over them…they summarily packed him off into slavery.

However we see the opposite in Prince Jonathan, son of Saul the king and heir to the throne of Israel. At some point during their friendship it was revealed to Jonathan that David was going to be king.

Jonathan even said as a much – “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.” 1 Samuel 23:17

Jonathan proved without a shadow he was a man of God. Imagine…you are the legitimate heir, the throne is yours and God reveals it’s actually going to bypass you…and go to your best mate. A ruffian at that and your dad hates him.

Come on, take the mask off for one moment, in Jonathan’s shoes, you would at the very minimum cry out to God asking – WHY?

But like Jonathan, after you’ve got used to the idea, you’d start planning your place in the new king’s court. Because surely if God doesn’t want me to be king and my best mate’s the king, I’ll still be in the mix – I’m ok with that…!!

This is spiritual authority in practice. Can you accept an assignment that may be different from your default projection? Awesome!!!

It’s important to remind ourselves of this that while doing church-life, it’s our God that gives us assignments. It’s God’s authority we are under.

Also, remember also there is a massive difference between your assignment and being commissioned. They are not the same thing.

Our pastor will commission us, but the assignment comes from God. Samuel anointed (commissioned) David to be king, long before he became king. Joshua was commissioned by Moses, then was given assignment to cross over into the promised land.

In all the above experiences, God did not seek permission from, consult with the prophets or great Holy men living on earth at the time.

There’s a good reason why God does not consult holy men and church leaders on who to give assignments and you won’t like it. God looks at the heart, all men including great men of God cannot help but look at the outward. Samuel one of the greatest prophets; of the decision was his would of anointed wrong son.

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.

The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:6-7

And that was Samuel…!! Remember this was the boy promised to God before he was born and his mother fulfilled that promise to God. Remember this is same Samuel who literally heard God call him.

The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. 1 Samuel 3:19

Our God doesn’t consult our very great and honourable leaders, no matter how spiritual they are; on who he selects. So when God selects you and gives you an assignment; you have to get on with it. Share with our church leaders so you can be commissioned to “go”. Then GO. Be encouraged.
